Week 11 presentation feedback.

It was a good presentation Sarah and rest of team members.

I believe, main differences between four photographers are their pursuit and disposition. Both Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson preferred invisible moments which mean they waited until the right moment to capture what they pursue. Also they preserve photograph without staging or creating. They just wanted to show the real moment to people. Your examples are express their pursuit and disposition that "the subject offered itself to me and I took advantage" by Kertesz and "approach the subject on tiptoe" by Henri. One the contrary, Eugene Smith and Sabasito Salgado tended to prefer visible moments. Also they used to create moments of truth.

The similarities between four Photographs’ works of art are colors and subjects. Both four photographers’ photos are based on Black and white. By using only those two colors, they expressed the emotion of photos deeply. Also all photographers used real life such as people, nature, and landscape as a subject of photograph so that audience can feel true emotions with comfortable mind from the pictures. Like you mentioned that “no matter how visible/invisible they were in the process, they captured true emotions”. I do agree with your opinion.

I do agree with you opinion that Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson have the better journalistic approach, because both Kertesz and Henri were symbol of photojournalism, and they would follow ethics rules so that inform or report true and reality moment of event to public.

◈ The main differences and similarities
The main differences between press photograph and art photograph are purpose, subject of photograph, and rules of photograph. Press photograph is a form of photography used to inform or report the truth to the public. The press photograph includes messages which reflect social problem, and photographer criticize problems indirect ways through photographs. Also press photograph take a picture that includes message for situation or problem. Press photography has a code of ethics and rules which include timeliness, accuracy, accountability to the public, and facts reported.

(Press Photographers Year Ltd) Photo by Jeff J Mitchell.
The first photograph that I chose was taken by Jeff J Mitchell. It is a picture of Colleagues of firefighter Ewan Williamson gather in torrential rain outside St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. It was shot July 22nd,2009

(Press Photographers Year Ltd) Photo by Mark Condren.
The second photo was shot by Mark Condren. It is a picture of A man stand at the ruin of a church after the earthquake struck Haiti. It was shot January 26th,2010

On the contrary, art photograph is a form of photography used to express photographer's feeling and vision. A common misconception is characteristic of art photograph. It is not like commercial photography as well as it is not produced to sell a product or promote an image. Photographer takes a picture whatever he wants and expresses various feeling to the public. Also there is no regulation so that photographer can edit or change picture from original.

However, both two photographs have similarities such as message of photograph and qualification of photographer. As I mentioned, both press and art photograph include message. Even though their purpose and subject of photo is different, both two photographs try to bring up the message to the public. Also photographer requires visual sense and photography skills so that take a right picture with good condition.

◈ Is it ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs? Why? Why not?-
There is no rules for art photograph. Art photograph can change or edit depends upon photographer, because only photographer can bring up meaning in to photo. Therefore, art photograph is ethical and acceptable to alter art photograph

◈ Is it ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs? Why? Why not?
No, because press photography has a code of ethics and rules which include timeliness, accuracy, accountability to the public, and facts reported, and the photographer must follow the rules to convey the truth not alter it in anyway.

Presentation Week 6: Documenting the Great Depression.

It was a good presentation especially last two pictures known as Migrant Mother which represent the Great Depression very well. Also I agree with the last answer "The role of the photo now is for people to see and understand the struggles these people faced at the time".

In my opinion, I believe that the project has significant impact on the society, because it has enough power to change or move people's mind. Also according to American memory it said "The photographers in both units documented America's mobilization during the early years of World War II, concentrating on such topics as aircraft factories and women in the workforce."

In the past, the role of Migrant Mother photograph informed people about how poor farmers' families suffered from the poverty, and encouraged them to overcome that situations. These days, the role of Migrant Mother photograph becomes the symbol of the great depression, and help us to understand at that time.
